Step-by-step instructions for growing Rudbeckia

    Plant Out

    3 May to 16 Jun

    Plant young plants around 3rd May - 16th June in a sunny, free-draining spot. Set them at the same depth they were in the pot, space them apart, and water in thoroughly straight after planting.

    Water Until Established

    25 May to 22 Jun

    Keep the soil evenly moist from 25th May through 22nd June while the roots settle. Water at the base in dry spells, especially in containers, but avoid leaving the compost sodden.

    Deadhead Flowers

    17 Jul to 20 Sept

    Start deadheading from 17th July and keep going until 20th September. Remove faded blooms back to a side shoot or leaf joint to keep the plant flowering for longer.

  4. 04

    Cut Back Stems

    20 Sept to 20 Oct

    After flowering finishes, cut back tired stems from 20th September to 20th October. Leave the crown intact and trim to tidy growth rather than cutting hard into the base.
