What to do through the growing season

Sow early baby turnips outdoors and lift at golf-ball size. Repeat small sowings for a steady run of roots.
01
Work the soil to a fine tilth around 25th March - 8th April. Take out large stones and clods. Do not add fresh manure. It makes roots fork. You want loose, well-prepared soil so roots swell evenly.
02
Sow thinly in shallow drills at from 8th April to 30th June. Sow a small batch every 21 days.
03
After each sowing, cover the row with fine mesh and seal the edges. Fine mesh reduces cabbage root fly and flea beetle. Keep it on through 8th September, until that batch is lifted.
04
After each sowing, thin to apart once they are large enough to handle, around 15th April - 21st July. Lift the extras gently so you do not disturb the roots you keep.
05
After each sowing, lift roots from 20th May once they are golf-ball size, for the best texture. Tennis-ball size is good for cooking. Keep picking through 8th September.

Companion planting can deter pests, improve pollination, and make better use of space. Some plants confuse pests or attract beneficial insects; others improve soil or offer shade to neighbours that need it.
