What to do through the growing season

Change the guide to see different planting timelines and tips.

Start chillies indoors in warmth, then grow them in a greenhouse for the longest cropping season.

  1. 01

    Sow Seeds Indoors

    6 Feb to 21 Feb

Sow seeds in a heated propagator at from 6th February - 21st February. Use seed compost and cover to a depth of . Keep moist and expect germination in 7-14 days.

    • If you don’t have a heated propagator, place pots in a warm airing cupboard or use a heat mat. Remove covers as soon as seedlings appear to prevent damping off.
  2. 02

    Prick Out Seedlings

27 Feb to 21 Mar Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Once seedlings have two true leaves, prick them out into small pots from 27th February - 21st March. Handle carefully by the leaves to avoid stem damage and plant at the same depth as before.

    • After pricking out, keep seedlings in bright, indirect light for a few days to help them recover without wilting.
  3. 03

    Pot On and Pinch Out

27 Mar to 25 Apr Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Pot on around 27th March - 25th April when roots show at the drainage holes. Pinching the growing tip at can make the plant bushier, but it can delay the first fruit.

    • Wait until you can see roots poking out of the drainage holes before potting on – moving plants up too early can stunt them.
  4. 04

    Transplant to Greenhouse

    6 May to 20 May

Move plants into their final greenhouse pots or beds around 6th May - 20th May, once night temperatures stay above . Space them apart and ventilate the greenhouse on warm days.

  5. 05

    Water and Feed Plants

20 May to 28 Oct Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every week

Keep the compost evenly moist from 20th May. Once the first flowers open, feed with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser every 7 days through 28th October.

    • Hold off feeding until the first flowers open. Feeding too early encourages leaf growth at the expense of fruit.
  6. 06

    Harvest Chillies

5 Jul to 28 Oct Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Cut fruits with scissors from 5th July. Pick them green or leave them to reach their mature colour. Flavour and heat depend on the variety. Keep picking through 28th October.

    • At the end of the season, pull up the whole plant and hang it upside down in a cool, dry place to ripen the remaining green chillies.
