What to do through the growing season

Start chillies indoors in warmth, then grow them in a greenhouse for the longest cropping season.

Sow seeds in a heated propagator at from 1st February - 16th February. Use seed compost and cover to a depth of . Keep moist and expect germination in 7-14 days.

Once seedlings have two true leaves, prick them out into small pots from 22nd February - 16th March. Handle carefully by the leaves to avoid stem damage and plant at the same depth as before.

Pot on around 22nd March - 20th April when roots show at the drainage holes. Pinching the growing tip at can make the plant bushier, but it can delay the first fruit.

Move plants into their final greenhouse pots or beds around 1st May - 15th May, once night temperatures stay above . Space them apart and ventilate the greenhouse on warm days.

Keep the compost evenly moist from 15th May. Once the first flowers open, feed with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser every 7 days through 8th November.

Cut fruits with scissors from 30th June. Pick them green or leave them to reach their mature colour. Flavour and heat depend on the variety. Keep picking through 8th November.
