Grow chillies in pots on a warm, sheltered patio or balcony, but be prepared to protect them from cold snaps.

    Sow Seeds Indoors

    31 Jan to 15 Feb

    Sow seeds in a heated propagator at from 31st January - 15th February. Use seed compost and cover to a depth of .. Keep moist and expect germination in 7-14 days.

    Prick Out Seedlings

    21 Feb to 28 Feb

    Once seedlings have two true leaves, prick them out into small pots from 21st February - 28th February. Handle carefully by the leaves to avoid stem damage and plant at the same depth as before.

    Pot On and Pinch Out

    7 Mar to 14 Mar

    Pot on into larger pots from 7th March - 14th March when roots fill the container. When plants reach tall, pinch out the growing tip to encourage a bushy shape. Pinch off the first flower bud to boost plant growth.

    Harden Off Plants

    23 Apr to 7 May

    Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over 10-14 days from 23rd April - 7th May. Start with a few hours in a sheltered spot and increase exposure daily, bringing them indoors at night if frost is forecast.

    Transplant to Outdoor Pots

    7 May to 21 May

    Move plants into final large pots on a sunny, sheltered patio from 7th May - 21st May, spacing them apart. Use fleece or cloches for protection during cold spells.

    Water and Feed Plants

    28 May to 12 Nov every 2 weeks

    Water regularly from 28th May, letting the compost dry out slightly between waterings to increase chilli heat. Once flowers appear, feed every 14 days with a high-potash tomato fertiliser until 12th November.

  7. 07

    Harvest Chillies

    23 Jul to 12 Nov

    Harvest from 23rd July by cutting fruits with scissors. Pick green for milder heat or leave to ripen fully to red, yellow, or other colours for maximum heat and sweetness. Continue harvesting until 12th November when frost threatens.
