Growing guide

What to do through the growing season

  1. 01

    Sow Seeds

19 Feb to 19 Mar Optional · repeat every 3 weeks

Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost around 19th February - 19th March. Cover very lightly with compost, because parsley germinates slowly and unevenly. Keep the compost evenly moist while you wait for shoots to appear.

  2. 02

    Thin Seedlings

19 Mar to 30 Apr Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

When seedlings are large enough to handle, from 19th March, thin them so the strongest plants have space to develop. If several have been sown close together, lift extras carefully rather than disturbing the roots too much.

  3. 03

    Pot On

26 Mar to 7 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Move each plant into its own small pot from 26th March once roots have filled the module or seed tray. Handle the seedlings gently and keep them in bright light so they do not stretch.

  4. 04

    Harden Off

    16 Apr to 30 Apr

From 16th April, put plants outside for a few hours a day and bring them back in at night. Build this up over about 10 days so they adjust before planting out.

  5. 05

    Plant Out

    14 May to 11 Jun

Set plants in their final position from 14th May, spacing them apart in moist, well-drained soil. Water them in thoroughly straight after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist while they settle.

  6. 06

    Remove Flower Stalks

13 Jun to 12 Dec Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every 2 weeks

From 13th June, check plants every 14 days and remove any flower stalks as soon as they appear. Flowering makes the leaves tougher and bitter, so cutting the stalks away keeps plants productive. Keep picking outer leaves to encourage new growth.

  7. 07

    Harvest Leaves

21 May to 12 Dec Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every week

Start picking from 21st May when plants are well established, then cut outer stems as needed through to 12th December. Take leaves little and often, and never strip a plant bare so it can keep producing.

Why companion planting matters

Companion planting can deter pests, improve pollination, and make better use of space. Some plants confuse pests or attract beneficial insects; others improve soil or offer shade to neighbours that need it.
