Growing guide

What to do through the growing season

  1. 01

    Sow Seeds

20 Mar to 3 Apr Optional · repeat every 3 weeks

Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost around 20th March - 3rd April. Cover very lightly with compost, because parsley germinates slowly and unevenly. Keep the compost evenly moist while you wait for shoots to appear.

  2. 02

    Thin Seedlings

10 Apr to 1 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

When seedlings are large enough to handle, from 10th April, thin them so the strongest plants have space to develop. If several have been sown close together, lift extras carefully rather than disturbing the roots too much.

  3. 03

    Pot On

17 Apr to 8 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Move each plant into its own small pot from 17th April once roots have filled the module or seed tray. Handle the seedlings gently and keep them in bright light so they do not stretch.

  4. 04

    Harden Off

    8 May to 15 May

Harden plants off from 8th May to 15th May. Put them outside for a few hours a day at first, bring them back in at night, then increase the time outside so they are ready to plant out.

  5. 05

    Plant Out

    15 May to 29 May

Set plants in their final position from 15th May, spacing them apart in moist, well-drained soil. Water them in thoroughly straight after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist while they settle.

  6. 06

    Remove Flower Stalks

14 Jun to 1 Dec Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every 2 weeks

From 14th June, check plants every 14 days and remove any flower stalks as soon as they appear. Flowering makes the leaves tougher and bitter, so cutting the stalks away keeps plants productive. Keep picking outer leaves to encourage new growth.

  7. 07

    Harvest Leaves

19 Jun to 1 Dec Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every week

Start picking from 19th June when plants are well established, then cut outer stems as needed through to 1st December. Take leaves little and often, and never strip a plant bare so it can keep producing.
