Growing guide

What to do through the growing season

  1. 01

    Sow seeds indoors

    14 Mar to 21 Mar

Sow seeds on their edge around 14th March - 21st March, about deep in small pots. Keep them at . Do not sow too early, as seedlings grow quickly and can become leggy or root-bound before planting out.

  2. 02

    Pot on seedlings

28 Mar to 18 Apr Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Move seedlings on once they have their first true leaves, from 28th March. Handle them by the leaves, not the stem, and keep them growing on in bright light so they do not become lanky.

  3. 03

    Harden off plants

4 Apr to 25 Apr Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Gradually acclimatise plants around 4th April - 25th April. Put them outside for a few hours at a time, then bring them back in if cold nights return, until they are ready for planting out.

  4. 04

    Plant out

    18 Apr to 25 Apr

Set plants into rich soil or a compost-enriched mound from 18th April once frost risk has passed. Water them in thoroughly straight after planting, then give each plant plenty of room to run.

  5. 05

    Train and protect vines

18 Apr to 23 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

From 18th April, keep the young growth well watered and protect it with fleece or a cloche if nights turn cold. Lift developing fruit onto dry boards or tiles so they do not sit on damp soil and rot.

  6. 06

    Feed and water

18 Apr to 10 Nov Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every 2 weeks

From 18th April to 10th November, water deeply at the base whenever the soil starts to dry. Feed every 14 days with a high-potash fertiliser once fruits begin to swell, and keep the leaves dry to limit mildew.

  7. 07

    Harvest and cure fruits

    20 Oct to 10 Nov

Harvest from 20th October to 10th November when the skin is hard, the colour is full, and the stalk is starting to cork. Cut each squash with a short stalk attached, then cure the fruits in a warm, dry, airy place for 10-14 days to harden the skin for storage.
