Growing guide

What to do through the growing season

  1. 01

    Sow seeds indoors

    6 Apr to 13 Apr

Sow seeds on their edge around 6th April - 13th April, about deep in small pots. Keep them at . Do not sow too early, as seedlings grow quickly and can become leggy or root-bound before planting out.

  2. 02

    Pot on seedlings

20 Apr to 11 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Move seedlings on once they have their first true leaves, from 20th April. Handle them by the leaves, not the stem, and keep them growing on in bright light so they do not become lanky.

  3. 03

    Harden off plants

27 Apr to 18 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Gradually acclimatise plants around 27th April - 18th May. Put them outside for a few hours at a time, then bring them back in if cold nights return, until they are ready for planting out.

  4. 04

    Plant out

    11 May to 18 May

Set plants into rich soil or a compost-enriched mound from 11th May once frost risk has passed. Water them in thoroughly straight after planting, then give each plant plenty of room to run.

  5. 05

    Train and protect vines

11 May to 15 Jun Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

From 11th May, keep the young growth well watered and protect it with fleece or a cloche if nights turn cold. Lift developing fruit onto dry boards or tiles so they do not sit on damp soil and rot.

  6. 06

    Feed and water

11 May to 30 Oct Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every 2 weeks

From 11th May to 30th October, water deeply at the base whenever the soil starts to dry. Feed every 14 days with a high-potash fertiliser once fruits begin to swell, and keep the leaves dry to limit mildew.

  7. 07

    Harvest and cure fruits

    9 Oct to 30 Oct

Harvest from 9th October to 30th October when the skin is hard, the colour is full, and the stalk is starting to cork. Cut each squash with a short stalk attached, then cure the fruits in a warm, dry, airy place for 10-14 days to harden the skin for storage.
