What to do through the growing season

    Sow Seeds Indoors

    11 Feb to 25 Feb

    Sow seeds in a heated propagator from 11th February to 25th February. Keep them at and sow to a depth of in fine seed compost.

    Prick Out Seedlings

    4 Mar to 1 Apr Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

    When the seedlings have their first true leaves, move them into small pots around 4th March - 1st April. Handle them by the leaves, not the stems, and keep them warm and bright so they don't draw.

    Pot On Plants

    18 Mar to 22 Apr Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

    Pot on as roots fill the first container, usually around 18th March - 22nd April. Move each plant into a larger pot with fresh compost and keep watering lightly but regularly.

    Harden Off Plants

    29 Apr to 13 May

    Gradually acclimatise plants over 15 days from 29th April to 13th May. Move them to a cooler, bright spot such as a cold frame or unheated greenhouse for longer periods each day, and protect them from cold nights until they are used to the lower temperatures.

    Transplant to Final Position

    13 May to 20 May

    Plant into a greenhouse border, growing bag or large pot around 13th May - 20th May, once nights stay above . Space plants apart in a bed, water them in and add a sturdy cane.

    Support and Train

    Tie the main stem to a cane from 27th May. When the plant reaches , pinch out the main growing tip to encourage side-shoots. Tie in heavy fruiting stems as they develop.

    Feed Plants

    Start feeding from 27th May and continue to 28th October. Use a high-potash tomato feed every 14 days once the first flowers appear, and keep the compost evenly moist so fruit sets properly.

    Harvest Fruits

    11 Aug to 28 Oct Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

    Pick fruit from 11th August to 28th October while the skins are glossy and before the seeds harden. Cut them with a small stalk attached, and keep picking regularly to encourage more fruit.
