Growing guide

What to do through the growing season

Change the guide to see different planting timelines and tips.

Sow indoors in warmth, plant into a greenhouse once it stays warm, then train plants up a support.

  1. 01

    Sow Seeds Indoors

    18 Apr to 25 Apr

Sow seeds on their edge to a depth of in modules or small pots from 18th April - 25th April. Use a heated propagator or warm windowsill at for reliable germination. Do not sow earlier than this window, as seedlings grow quickly and suffer if root-bound.

  2. 02

    Pot On Seedlings

2 May to 16 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Once seedlings have two true leaves, pot them on into larger pots from 2nd May - 16th May. Handle carefully to avoid damaging the delicate roots, and use a rich potting compost. Keep them in a warm, bright spot to encourage strong growth.

  3. 03

    Transplant to Greenhouse

    23 May to 30 May

Plant out into greenhouse beds or large containers from 23rd May - 30th May. Space plants apart and plant on a slight mound to keep the stem base dry. Provide vertical support like canes or strings for the vines to climb.

  4. 04

    Train and Pinch Out

30 May to 13 Jun Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Train the main stem up its support around 30th May - 13th June and pinch out the tip when it reaches the roof. Check the seed packet before removing flowers. On all-female greenhouse varieties, remove any male flowers, which have no tiny fruit behind them. Leave them on mixed-flowering varieties.

  5. 05

    Water and Feed Regularly

23 May to 9 Oct Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every 2 weeks

Keep the soil evenly moist from 23rd May, watering at the base and away from the main stem. Once flowering starts, feed container plants every 14 days with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser.

  6. 06

    Harvest Cucumbers

7 Jul to 9 Oct Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Harvest fruits frequently while they are small and firm from 7th July - 9th October. Use a sharp knife to cut them from the vine, picking every few days to encourage more production. Regular harvesting prevents fruits becoming oversized and bitter.
