Brussels sprouts are a hardy winter brassica (cabbage family) that form sturdy, leafy stems often around 60–90cm tall. They produce edible mini-cabbage buds along the stem from autumn through winter. Thanks to their cold tolerance, sprouts remain productive into late winter, and frost actually improves their sweetness.

    Sow seeds indoors in modules around 25th March - 9th April. Cover with of compost and keep at until germination.

    Prick Out Seedlings

    8 Apr to 30 Apr Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

    Prick out seedlings into individual pots once they have true leaves, around 8th April - 30th April. Handle carefully to avoid damaging the stems.

    Harden Off Plants

    29 Apr to 21 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

    Harden off plants over 7-10 days around 29th April - 21st May to prepare them for outdoor conditions.

    Transplant Outdoors

    8 May to 22 May

    Transplant seedlings to their final position around 8th May - 22nd May. Space them apart and firm the soil well around each plant.

    Install Pest Protection

    8 May to 29 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

    Cover plants with fine netting and fit brassica collars immediately after transplanting to protect against common pests.

    Feed Plants

    22 May to 28 Nov Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every 4 weeks

    Apply a nitrogen-rich fertiliser every 28 days from 22nd May until 28th November to support growth through the season.

    Harvest Later Sprouts

    28 Nov to 27 Jan 2028

    Harvest sprouts from the bottom of the stalk upwards through 28th November - 27th January 2028. Pick them when firm and about walnut-sized. Cold weather often improves the flavour.
