When to plant Pak Choi in Nottingham

Sow thinly from 20th April - 23rd September in shallow drills, then again every 21 days for a steady supply. Cover lightly with fine soil and keep the row moist while the seed germinates.

When seedlings have a couple of true leaves, thin to one plant every 20 cm. Use the thinnings in the kitchen if they are healthy, and keep the strongest plants going.

From 27th April, cover the row with insect-proof mesh or fleece before the seedlings emerge, to keep flea beetle off. Keep checking for slugs and snails on the young leaves. Use barriers, hand-picking, or pellets where you need them, and keep the bed tidy.

• Mesh needs to be on before the seed comes up. Flea beetle will pit young leaves overnight if you wait.

From 27th April, keep the soil evenly moist so plants grow away quickly and are less likely to bolt in warm spells. Water at the base, not over the leaves, and give a good soak when the top of the soil starts to dry.

Start picking from 20th May once plants are firm enough to crop. Take outer leaves for cut-and-come-again, or cut whole plants at soil level when they reach eating size.
