9 Jan – 7 Mayevery 2 weeksSow seeds thinly in shallow drills around 9 Jan - 7 May, then cover with of fine soil and water in carefully. Early sowings often do best under fleece or a cloche to warm the ground a little.
Install Pest Protection
9 Jan – 7 MayFit insect-proof mesh over the row straight after sowing, from 9th January. Keep it in place through the growing period so carrot fly cannot reach the crop.
Thin Seedlings
30 Mar – 6 AprThin the seedlings carefully from 30th March to apart once they are large enough to handle. Water lightly after thinning to settle the soil and reduce the smell that can attract pests.
Lift Roots
18 May – 14 NovBegin lifting usable roots from 18th May and keep picking through 18th May - 14th November. Early sowings may size up faster than expected, so check them regularly rather than leaving them too long.
