Growing guide

What to do through the growing season

  1. 01

    Sow Seeds Indoors

    5 Mar to 20 Mar

Sow seeds in modules around 5th March - 20th March, about deep. Keep them in bright, cool conditions and thin to one seedling per module once they have a couple of true leaves.

  2. 02

    Grow On Seedlings

19 Mar to 17 Apr Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

From 19th March, keep the young plants moving steadily in good light and water them lightly but regularly. Avoid letting them become pot-bound, as checked growth can lead to weaker plants later.

  3. 03

    Harden Off Plants

2 Apr to 1 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Harden off seedlings over 30 days from 2nd April to 1st May. Give them a few days outside in shelter, then leave them out for longer each day before planting.

  4. 04

    Transplant and Firm In

    3 May to 17 May

Plant out from 3rd May, setting each plant apart in rows spaced wider than that. Firm the soil well around the roots, then water in thoroughly so the plants settle and the roots do not rock in the wind.

  5. 05

    Protect from Pests

26 Apr to 10 Mar 2028 Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

From 26th April, cover the crop with fine mesh to keep out cabbage white butterflies and pigeons. Fit brassica collars round the stems at planting time or soon after to reduce cabbage root fly damage.

  6. 06

    Feed Plants

24 May to 19 Oct Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every 4 weeks

Start feeding from 24th May and repeat every 28 days until 19th October. Use a high-nitrogen feed while the plants are making leaves, then stop before the coldest weather so the growth stays firm rather than soft.

  7. 07

    Harvest Side Shoots

30 Dec to 10 Mar 2028 Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Cut the first side shoots from 30th December and keep picking until 10th March 2028. Harvest the shoots while they are tight and tender, cutting just above a leaf joint so more side shoots can follow.
