Growing guide

What to do through the growing season

  1. 01

    Sow Seeds Indoors

    29 Mar to 5 Apr

Sow seeds on their edge around 29th March - 5th April in small pots of warm seed compost. Keep them at and do not sow too early, because marrow seedlings grow fast and can suffer if they become root-bound.

  2. 02

    Pot On Seedlings

12 Apr to 3 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

When the first true leaves appear, prick out or move each seedling into a larger pot at 12th April - 3rd May. Handle them gently and keep the compost just moist, not wet.

  3. 03

    Harden Off Plants

19 Apr to 10 May Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

From 19th April - 10th May, move the plants outside for short periods each day so they adjust to wind, cooler nights and direct sun. Keep them under fleece or in a cold frame at night if conditions are still unsettled.

  4. 04

    Plant Out

    3 May to 10 May

Set plants out at 3rd May - 10th May once frost risk has passed and the soil is warm. Plant into rich, well-watered mounds or pockets, then water in thoroughly without wetting the stem.

  5. 05

    Support and Train

17 May to 9 Jul Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

From 17th May - 9th July, keep the plants centred on their mound and tuck the stems back if they stray. In a small garden, use a short frame or straw to keep fruit off damp soil and reduce rot.

  6. 06

    Feed and Water

2 Jun to 2 Nov Dates as each sowing reaches this stage Optional · repeat every 2 weeks

From 2nd June - 2nd November, water deeply around the plant rather than over the leaves, and feed every 14 days once the first fruits set. Keep the compost or soil evenly moist so the fruit fills properly and avoids bitterness.

  7. 07

    Harvest Fruits

2 Jul to 2 Nov Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

Pick fruits from 2nd July while they are still young and tender, then keep harvesting regularly until 2nd November. Cut them with a knife or secateurs so you do not damage the stem, and check plants every few days. Do not eat any fruit that tastes unusually bitter; discard the fruit and remove the plant.
