  1. Sow Seeds

    14 Feb – 30 Jun
    every 3 weeks

Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost around 14th February - 30th June. Cover very lightly with compost, because parsley germinates slowly and unevenly. Keep the compost evenly moist while you wait for shoots to appear.

  2. Thin Seedlings

    7 May – 21 May

When seedlings are large enough to handle, from 7th May, thin them so the strongest plants have space to develop. If several have been sown close together, lift extras carefully rather than disturbing the roots too much.

  3. Pot On

    14 May – 28 May

Move each plant into its own small pot from 14th May once roots have filled the module or seed tray. Handle the seedlings gently and keep them in bright light so they do not stretch.

  4. Harden Off

    2 Apr – 16 Apr

From 2nd April, put plants outside for a few hours a day and bring them back in at night. Build this up over about 10 days so they adjust before planting out.

  5. Plant Out

    30 Apr – 28 May

Set plants in their final position from 30th April, spacing them apart in moist, well-drained soil. Water them in thoroughly straight after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist while they settle.

  6. Pinch Out Tips

    13 Jun – 6 Dec
    every 2 weeks

From 13th June, pinch off the growing tips regularly to stop plants becoming leggy and to encourage fresh leafy growth. Remove any flower stalks as soon as they appear, because flowering makes the leaves tougher and less useful.

  7. Harvest Leaves

    9 Jul – 6 Dec
    every week

Start picking from 9th July when plants are well established, then cut outer stems as needed through to 6th December. Take leaves little and often, and never strip a plant bare so it can keep producing.

Plants to avoid

Why companion planting matters

Companion planting can deter pests, improve pollination, and make better use of space. Some plants confuse pests or attract beneficial insects; others improve soil or offer shade to neighbours that need it.
