Growing guide

What to do through the growing season

  1. 01

    Plant Bare-root Canes

    30 Nov to 7 Feb 2027

Plant bare-root canes during 30th November - 7th February 2027 in well-dug soil with plenty of compost worked in. Set the crown at the same depth it was growing before, firm it in, and water in thoroughly straight away. If you have a container-grown plant, you can plant it at a suitable time outside this window, then water it in well.

  2. 02

    Water to Establish

30 Nov to 6 Aug 2027 Dates as each sowing reaches this stage

From 30th November, keep the soil evenly moist through the first growing season, especially in dry spells. Water at the base rather than over the canes, and keep the area free of weeds so the roots can establish properly.

  3. 03

    Mulch and Feed

    3 Feb to 5 Mar 2027 Optional · repeat every 365 days

From 3rd February 2027, spread a thick mulch of garden compost or well-rotted manure around the plants, leaving a little space around the crown. Repeat each year to keep moisture in and support fruiting.

  4. 04

    Fit Bird Netting

    3 Jun to 18 Jun 2027

From 3rd June 2027, put up bird netting before the fruit starts to colour. Check it is pulled tight and fixed securely, so birds do not get under it.

  5. 05

    Pick Ripe Fruit

    18 Jun to 2 Aug 2027

Harvest from 18th June 2027 to 2nd August 2027 once the fruit is deep coloured and comes away with a gentle pull. Pick every couple of days in London to keep the canes productive and reduce losses to birds and soft fruit rot.

  6. 06

    Prune Fruited Canes

    2 Aug to 1 Sept 2027

After harvest, from 2nd August 2027, cut out the canes that have fruited and tie in the new canes to their supports. Keep the centre open so air can move through the plant and the next season’s growth gets light.
