What to do through the growing season
01
Sow thinly around 7th February - 21st February on fine seed compost. Cover with a light dusting of compost or vermiculite. Keep the tray warm, bright, and just moist until it germinates.
02
When seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out from 28th February into small pots. Keep the strongest plants and handle them gently to avoid damaging the roots.
03
From 4th April, move plants outside for a few hours each day over about 10 days. Keep them sheltered and bring them in if cold nights are forecast.
04
Set plants in their final spot from 18th April in full sun and free-draining soil. Space apart. Water in, then let the soil dry between waterings.
05
From 23rd April to 21st June, pinch out soft growing tips to keep the plant bushy. This is a first-year pinch, not a yearly prune. Never cut into old bare wood.
06
Pick a few leaves from 8th May once the plant is well rooted. Take tips for the best flavour. Leave enough growth for the plant to thicken. Keep this light pick through 21st July.
