Growing guide

What to do through the growing season

  1. 01

    Plant Bare-Root Rose

    2 Dec to 25 Feb 2027

Plant bare-root roses around 2nd December - 25th February 2027 in well-prepared, free-draining soil. Only plant if the ground is open, not frozen or wet. Spread the roots out. Set the graft union just at or slightly below soil level. Firm in well. Cut back the main stems by about half to an outward-facing bud. Water in well. They flower next summer.

  2. 02

    Water Until Established

    30 Apr to 29 Oct 2027

During the first growing season after planting, keep the soil evenly moist from 30th April 2027 to 29th October 2027. Water deeply at the base in dry spells and keep mulch clear of the stems.

  3. 03

    Deadhead Spent Blooms

    31 May to 12 Nov 2027

From 31st May 2027 to 12th November 2027, remove faded flowers back to a strong leaf pair. This keeps repeat-flowering roses producing new buds.

  4. 04

    Feed in Spring

    2 Apr to 30 Apr 2027

From 2nd April 2027 through 30th April 2027, give a balanced rose feed or general-purpose fertiliser. Water it in well.

    • A second feed after the first flush of flowers helps repeat flowering.
  5. 05

    Prune In Late Winter

    31 Jan to 2 Mar 2027

Prune around 31st January - 2nd March 2027, before strong growth starts. Do not prune into frozen wood. Remove dead, damaged, and crossing shoots. Shorten the remaining stems to an outward-facing bud.

  6. 06

    Tidy For Winter

    29 Oct to 12 Dec 2027

After leaf drop around 29th October - 12th December 2027, clear fallen leaves and any diseased material from under the plant. Do not cut the shrub to the ground. Leave the framework in place.
