Step-by-step instructions for growing Chrysanthemum

  1. 01

    Plant Out

    8 Jun to 9 Jul

    Plant rooted plants or cuttings around 8th June - 9th July in fertile, free-draining soil. Set them at the same depth they were growing before, then water in thoroughly straight away.

  2. 02

    Water Until Established

    23 Jun to 21 Sept

    Keep the soil evenly moist from 23rd June while new roots form. Water at the base in dry spells and avoid wetting the leaves, especially in damp weather.

  3. 03

    Feed and Deadhead

    23 Jul to 5 Sept every 2 weeks

    From 23rd July through 5th September, feed every 14 days with a high-potash liquid feed and remove faded blooms as they fade. Pinch or cut off spent flowers back to a leaf joint so the plant keeps flowering for longer.

  4. 04

    Tie In Tall Stems

    7 Jul to 21 Oct

    Check plants from 7th July and stake or tie in taller stems before they flop in wind and rain. Use soft ties and keep the plant open so air can move through it.

  5. 05

    Cut Back Growth

    6 Sept to 5 Oct

    After flowering finishes around 6th September - 5th October, cut stems back to a low framework once frost has blackened the top growth. Leave the crown in place if you want the plant to overwinter.
